1. Order an extra vane for vertical blinds covering sliding windows & glass doors.
Patterns, styles & colors come and go quickly. The $6-$12 cost of the vane is repaid with peace of mind, knowing that you have a matching replacement, should one ever become damaged.
2 . Don’t use indoor treatments, outdoors.
A simple rule to follow and is self-explanatory.
BONUS TIPS…… There are degrees of stainless steel. Make SURE that if you are installing something on an outside porch, or lanai, to get marine quality stainless steel. Regular stainless steel parts from the corner hardware store can pit and rust over even a short time, especially if you live on a saltwater beach front property.
3. If you are interested in blocking light, put your treatments “on the wall”, or get interior shutters.
Tell your design consultant (sales guy) that you want an outside mount and to make sure the treatments go at least 6 inches over the window on both sides, and at least 2 inches down past the edge of the bottom sill. If you install them as an inside mount, or with a much smaller overlap, rays of light will come in on the sides of the blinds as the sun moves through the sky. I would say that shutters are the best light blocking application you can get!
4. Ask what the treatments are made of.
Find out exactly what you are buying. Is the woven wood you are buying actually Bamboo? Is the honeycomb shade paper or fabric? Do the vertical blinds have an applied or embossed design? All these questions, and more, should be addressed as you decide which product will fit into your lifestyle the best.
5. Ask where the products come from…You should always make an effort to buy locally,. wherever you live.
6. Ask about discounts…you should do this with every thing you ever purchase.
7. Discuss with the design consultant about the exact position of the controls.
The factory will usually put all controls on the right, but you might find it better to have them on the other side should your existing room design call for that. You don’t want to call them back later to change the position after you discover it’s inconvenient to reach ‘behind the easy chair’ to open and close the blinds.
8. Remember there are remote controls for everything.
More affordable than ever! You can easily open, close, and tilt hard to reach blinds. Windows on the second level or behind the big tub are prime places we set customers up with remote control access to their blinds. Some remotes can go 100’ and are powerful enough to pierce 64” of wall!
9. Caulk is a wonderful thing!
If you are conquering this project alone, don’t necessarily lock yourself into the past. Before using the old mounts, examine them carefully. Are they really in the right place? How do they look? Are there paint spills on them or scratches? If you do have to move the mounts, or use different ones, simply caulk over the old holes. Don’t fret about this, just do it. Get Latex caulk,.. it’s easy to find, easy to apply, and easy to wash off your hands.
10. When buying blinds for the kitchen, stay away from honeycomb or roller shades.
Horizontal blinds are more practical, easy to clean, & able to deal with the changing atmosphere in the kitchen area. These faux wood blinds have beautiful matching vertical blinds, should you have a sliding glass door in view of the kitchen window. Ask about a product called Leisurewood. It’s affordable, durable & absolutely beautiful!
