Don’t be fooled by cardboard shutters!!!!!!!
Even big worldwide companies sell these types of cheaply made, Chinese manufactured, particle board filled shutters,. they look nice,…until someone leaves the window open over night & the morning dew hits it a few times. Or someone really sprays it down good with cleaner to wipe them off. The composite material inside will swell & look horrible. You ‘permanent home improvement’ will become a permanent eyesore, & thorn in your side.
As the owner of a window treatment store, I have relationships with all kinds of shutter manufacturers. There are several different types of interior shutters & you really need to know what you are getting. To make that a little easier, I wrote the following article.
How to choose Interior Shutters for You Home**
There are many types of shutters on the market these days & choosing the right shutter for your home, & your lifestyle can be a daunting task. There is a multitude of choices in style & composition, & also color, size, & design. Here, we will outline the most popular types of shutters available in our area, & make it easy for you to act like an expert shutter shopper! You’ll discover the hidden secrets inside the shutter itself, see why they can pay for itself with utility bill savings, as well as look beautiful & luxurious in your home! Shutters are great for every room of the house. Looking just as great from the outside, as they do from the inside, shutters are especially appropriate for neighborhoods that like to keep a clean & uniform look on the block! We’ll begin with a general description of the most common shutter features.
Shutters can replace, sit on top of, or cover a marble windowsill. They can completely install inside the dimensions of the window or install around the window giving it a picture frame effect. The choice is yours in color, louver size, & style. Louvers can come locally anywhere from 2 ½ to 4 ½ inches wide. The control arm for the louvers can be in the front, hidden in the back, or not present at all.
Panels can be hinged, bi-folded on a track, or each panel can hang from a bypass track system allowing each panel to ‘rest’ on top of each other when all are slid to the side. The bypass track system is most popularly used application, to cover a sliding glass door! We even have beautiful cutouts for door handles, if you’d like to adorn your French doors with shutters!
Shutters can also cover your arched windows. Traditional louver or a sunburst pattern, are your choice of style in shutter arches. Louvers in arches can be stationary or mobile.
Shutters are made with a divider rail separating the top & bottom portions of each panel. You decide how high these rails are to be built in, in order for you to maximize your control of light & privacy in each room.
Today, most all PVC products used in shutter coverings are specially infused with material to deflect heat & UV rays. This is especially helpful to us in the Gulf Coast area as we try to combat the constantly rising cost of heating in the winter &, more to the point, cooling in the summer.
Vinyl Shutters – Fire retardant & self-extinguishing, this sturdy shutter is made from extrusion with computer-designed dimensions. Durable & long lasting these are great for all areas, from kid & pet filled homes to a beautiful retirement home! Easy to maintain & design, these vinyl shutters come with a 25-year warranty! We find these to be the best value.
Solid Poly Shutters – Shutters created from a solid poly extruded material, this is then wrapped in the Celuka Vinyl process. You can get these in white or stained natural colors.
Wood Wrapped Shutters – Shutters made from solid wood or fiberboard planks that are stacked together, & wrapped with a Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) coating. The Vinyl is actually clad over the wood with a special heating process.
Wood Composite Wrapped Shutters – Shutters made from solid pieces of compressed composite ‘wood’ wrapped in a material called Celuka Vinyl, which is a hard poly foam product that protects & strengthens the shutters.
Wooden Shutters – Solid wood construction from woods such as Cedar, Oak, Poplar & Pine. However, the most popular, best quality wood for interior wood shutters is Basswood, & if you choose wooden shutters in our humid area, you’ll be glad you chose Basswood, for it’s dependable performance in color steadfastness & strength. You can get these finished or unfinished, stained or painted.
