How Do I Clean Horizontal Blinds?
Horizontal blinds are an
attractive and inexpensive window covering that can provide complete privacy
without permanently blocking sunlight. The downside is that each horizontal
slat is the perfect landing pad for dust, grime, cooking grease and cigarette
smoke. There are several clever gadgets that promise to make the chore of
cleaning blinds easier but, whether you use a fancy tool or a plain cloth,
regular cleaning is the key.
Step 1
Adjust slats to the up position. Dust
both sides of metal or wooden blinds with a commercially treated dust cloth, or
one you have sprayed with a household dusting product. You can also vacuum them
with your machine's brush head attached. Readjust blinds to the down position
and repeat the process. Vacuum fabric blinds or dust them with a dry cloth.
Step 2
Wash the dusted metal blinds with a
soft cloth dampened in warm water with or without a mild soap. Adjust the slats
up, then down, wiping both sides. Wash fabric blinds in the same manner with a
cloth lightly dampened in clean water only.
Step 3
Fill a bathtub full of lukewarm water.
Add a small amount of dish soap or general household cleaner. Slide metal
blinds out of their brackets and place them in the tub. Gently wipe the blinds
with a soft cloth. Rinse and dry them well before rehanging.
Step 4
Clean wooden blinds with a soft cloth
and lemon oil or a similar wood-cleaning oil. Adjust the blinds up and down,
wiping both sides. Use a clean cloth to remove any oil residue.
