Tips on Cleaning Faux Wood Blinds
Faux wood blinds
are a popular choice for decorating windows and for providing privacy. Faux
wood blinds look like real wood but are manufactured using synthetic material.
Faux wood blinds will not warp in high humidity like real wood ones. Faux wood
blinds do not reveal nicks and scratches as easily as wood. Faux wood is also
easier to clean than real wood.
Regular Dusting
·
Blinds are one of the most overlooked
items in a house when it comes to cleaning.
A little preventive maintenance can have your faux wood blinds
looking fabulous. A regular light dusting helps prevent accumulation of dust
and dirt that can leave your blinds looking dirty.
The easiest way to dust your faux wood blinds is to use a feather
duster or soft cloth on each side of the slats. Old socks make excellent dust cloths. A dryer fabric
softener sheet can be used on the slats to help repel dust and reduce static.
Open the blinds so the slats are at 45 degree angles. Wipe each
slat. Open the blinds so that the slats are at a 45 degree angle the other way
to clean the other side of the blinds. Do not shut the blinds all the way
because a small portion of each slat will not get dusted.
If there is a lot of dust, the brush attachment of a vacuum
cleaner can be used to clean each side of the slats. Some stores and website
outlets sell mini blind attachments for vacuum cleaners.
Deeper
Cleaning
·
When regular dusting is not enough, you
can clean faux wood blinds like you would aluminum mini blinds with a mild
detergent such as dish soap.
Avoid abrasive cleaners and chemical solvents because they might
scratch the blind. Do not use bleach because it might discolor the blind.
Use a cloth or sponge and moisten with lukewarm water to wipe each
slat. Wipe dry.
Some faux wood blinds can be immersed in water, but check the
information that came with your set before doing so. If you can immerse them in
water, use lukewarm water and a mild detergent.
It is a good idea not
to saturate the top of the blind. If the pulley system gets wet, it could rust.
Gently dry the slats before hanging on the window.
