Victorian Window Shutters

Do you know which shutters were the Victorian window shutters? The inside or outside window shutters? Decorative or plain?

Victorians used shutters for two purposes:
  • Decorative window shutters
These were used on the outside for protection, insulation, and decoration.
These outdoor window shutters were made of pine wood and were either solid wood or with unmovable louvers. They were often painted green or any other dark color.
Window shutters provided an extra layer of insulation against what were often leaky and inefficient panes of glass.
When they were closed a special Victorian slide bolt was used for security and protection.
When opened the shutters would frame the two sides of the window with a special charm adding to the style of the house, as you can see in this Victorian house above.
  • Interior wood shutters
Shutters were also used indoors, mostly in stately rooms like libraries and studies, where more lavish window coverings like draperies were not appropriate.
These shutters had movable louvers for light control and sun protection (to protect the valuable furniture in the room from being destroyed by the sun). They were stained or painted to match the woodwork of the room, this made the shutters blend into the room perfectly.
