Going Beyond LEED

Posted by Neil Gordon on Sun, Nov 14, 2010 @ 06:09 AM

What is LEED®?

The LEED green building certification program encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through a suite of rating systems that recognize projects that implement strategies for better environmental and health performance.
LEED is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Who uses LEED?

Architects, real estate professionals, facility managers, engineers, interior designers, landscape architects, construction managers, lenders and government officials all use LEED to help transform the built environment to sustainability. State and local governments across the country are adopting LEED for public-owned and public-funded buildings; there are LEED initiatives in federal agencies, including the Departments of Defense, Agriculture, Energy, and State; and LEED projects are in countries worldwide, including Canada, Brazil, Mexico and India.

LEED and Window Coverings

LEED also addresses several applications for the use of Window Coverings. LEED points may be awarded for Window Coverings in the following areas:

Daylighting LEED NC 2.2 – EA 1.0
Daylighting Shading Systems work through redirecting the natural light to reduce the usage of artificial lighting and thereby reduce the energy used for powering electric lights and energy used cooling the heat generate by the electric lights.

Energy Reduction LEED NC 2.2 – EA 1.0
Energy reduction through window coverings may be quantified in two primary categories; reduction of solar energy entering a space and thereby reducing the amount energy used for cooling and reduction of thermal energy leaving the space and thereby reducing the energy required for heating.

Recycled Content LEED NC 2.2 – MR 4.1, 4.2
Recycled content can be defined as materials used in the production of products that have been redirected from the waste stream. Usually these materials are associated into two categories, pre-consumer and post-consumer.

Automation LEED NC 2.2 – EA 1.0
Maximum indoor comfort can be achieved through building and automation systems which regulate and allow users discrete management over thermal control and light levels to suit individual needs or those of groups in shared spaces.

Indoor Environmental Quality LEED NC 2.2 – EQ 4.2
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are air pollutants produced from off gassing of materials that can cause respiratory and other health problems. Decorating with Fabric has a full line of low VOC products that pass the GreenGuard® Air Quality Certified® and GreenGuard® for Children and Schools SM standards. All GreenGuard Certified Products have been tested for their chemical emissions performance including for formaldehyde, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), respirable particles, ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon dioxide.

What LEED doesn't address:
1.      Solar Shade Fabric Performance such as Fabric Content (PVC Free), Glare Control, Openness of Weave, Color of Fabric.
2.      Window covering options for reducing energy leaving the space.
3.      Fabrics and materials used for window treatments and upholstery.

Solar Shade Performance

While Solar Shades play a key role in daylighting concerns with LEED, the USGBC does not address fabric content, glare control performance, the differences in the openess of the various weaves available or the color choices of the fabrics.

Fabric Content:
Let's take a look at the back of the fabric card for Mermet's M-Screen.
Across the top of the chart are codes: Ts, Rs, As and Tv. These codes are interpreted as:
Ts = Solar Transmittance is the energy that passes through the fabric
Rs = Solar Reflectance is the percentage of solar energy reflected
As = Solar Absorption is the amount absorbed by the shade fabric.
Ts + Rs + As = 100%

Tv = Visual Transmittance is the measure of Glare
Visual Transmittance
The number is a ratio of the amount of total solar energy which passes through the glass and screen combined.
M-Screen 5% White/White = 15
This fabric reduces glare by 85%
M-Screen 5% Charcoal/Sky = 5
This fabric reduces glare by 95%
As you can see, the darker the color, the better the performance for reducing glare.

Shading Coefficient
Shading Coefficient is the percentage of solar heat gain through a combination of glass and screen. Light colors have lower shading coefficients and darker colors have higher shading coefficients. Lower shading coefficients means lower heat gain and better thermal performance.
M-Screen 5% White/White = .36
This fabric allows 36% heat gain
M-Screen 5% Charcoal/Sky = .65
This fabric allows 65% heat gain
In terms of reducing heat gain, the lighter the color, the better the performance.

Openness
The most common weaves in solar shades are 1%, 3%, 5% and 10%. You can also look at it as the 3% open weave is also 97% closed. To determine which weave is the appropriate percentage, I usually recommend 1% for areas where light and privacy are needed such as bathrooms. 3% and 5% are great for intense sun exposure such as south and west orientations. For northern exposures, 10% is adequate. Eastern facing windows will get morning sun, so 5% works well.

Fabric Options
We offer a wide range of fabric options from several weavers such as Verosol, Hunter Douglas Contract, Draper, Mermet, Rockland and Phifer. In addition we also have several PVC free fabrics and blackout fabrics.

Insulating window blinds and shades

Replace your vinyl blinds with insulated window coverings…

Insulating window blinds, shades and coverings are thermal energy saving window treatments that all homeowners should seriously consider.

These thermal window coverings are far more energy efficient and decorative than standard vinyl mini blinds. Standard vinyl blinds with slats are essentially just light restricting window treatments.

Insulating window blinds and shades both halt the costly escape of household heat during the winter as well as shade and absorb solar heat during the dog days of summer.  In fact thermal window shades can stop up to 80% of heat loss and 86% of heat gain.

Pleated window shades are the new standard

Pleated window shades have uniformly stitched layers of fabric.

These layers providing an insulating barrier between the window pane and a homes interior.

There similar in texture to decorative pleated lamp shades, and unlike mini blinds they have no adjustable slats.

Instead they can be neatly and easily adjusted vertically or horizontally to regulate incoming sunlight.

Cellular or Honeycomb window shades

Cellular or honeycomb window shades look very similar to pleated shades, in fact there also made of pleated fabrics.

The difference is cellular shades have other layers sewed to form extra insulating compartments between the pleated fabrics.

The extra insulation between the pleated fabrics resembles a honeycomb, hence their often used secondary name.

These thermal window coverings are available in single, double and triple insulated layers or cells. The more cells between the pleated fabrics, then the greater the insulation and the home energy savings potential.

Decorative appeal

Insulating window blinds and shades are year round energy saving window coverings, there also quite functional and decorative. Pleated and cellular shades are much more decorative than standard vinyl blinds.

Insulated window shades stack and fold very lightly, unlike heavy decorative curtains and drapes. In years past they were popular among upscale homeowners only, now these energy saving window treatments are available in a wide array of designs and colors at affordable prices.

Other insulated window coverings
Insulating window film is a thin sheet of heat absorbing and reflecting material that can be applied to the inside of a window pane. This insulating window film can significantly reduce both heat loss and gain.
Interior storm windows provide homeowners much of the same insulating energy savings benefits that double paned and triple paned windows do. And plasticwindow insulation film can serve as temporary interior storm windows for homeowners seeking a more cost effective solution.
External window shutters if installed and fitted properly can very effectively insulate household heat and also block solar heat gain.

Three advantages of window treatments

Three advantages of window treatments

For many average citizens everywhere, their primary residence is the biggest investment they make in their lives. In addition to providing shelter for their families, the cost of their primary residence is a major investment that they would like to preserve and protect. This preservation includes making the necessary maintenance to the primary home as needed to keep all of the structural components and other accessories in proper working order. Proper window treatments fall into this category. In this article, we will explore three advantages that proper window treatments can provide for your home.

The first advantage that a proper window treatment provides is to offer a level of privacy to the occupants. In this day and age where high powered binoculars and other spy devices are freely available in the market, you need to ensure that the privacy of yourself and your family is properly maintained. Window treatments by way of curtains and blinds offer this privacy without costing too much.
The second advantage that proper window treatments provide is in the area of energy conservation. Proper choice and installation of window treatments such as curtains and blinds result in less of an energy transfer between the insides of the home and the exterior. This will result in lower heating costs in the winter and lower cooling costs in the summer. Thus your energy costs can be lowered by the proper use of window treatments.
The third advantage of using elegant window treatments is the improvement in the decor of your interiors and thereby the pleasant living conditions for yourself and your family. No one likes to stare at blank windows. Adding a little bit of color to the windows by way of window treatments can complement the other furnishings in the room and make your living conditions more serene and pleasurable. Sometimes, great curtains and blinds can even be a conversation piece and a topic of interesting discussions.
Thus proper window treatments offer more value for the money spent than most other home improvement projects.

How Energy Efficient Are You?
 by: Coach Pat Morgan

While out for a run the other day, my mind wandered to the energy efficiency ratings associated with appliances and how we, too, utilize energy at different rates based on a variety of things. At the physical level, we burn energy constantly and can improve our efficiency through diet, exercise and weight control. We exert mental energy thinking, problem solving, brainstorming, worrying and more. We renew our spiritual energy through prayer, meditation or quiet time, or reading. It makes sense that we want to be as energy efficient as possible in order to function at our peak and feel our best.
Where are your energy leaks? Are you losing energy to annoyances that are getting in the way of efficiency? It might be something like a messy desk or unorganized office, constant interruptions, tools that don't function properly, or a project you've been procrastinating about starting. Annoyances like these can be costly, not only in the energy they consume, but also in the decreased productivity and inefficiency they cause.
What about energy drains in your life? Drains are bigger than leaks. They cost you much more and leave you feeling tired, grumpy, frustrated or stuck. Perhaps you are working in an environment that is not conducive to your most creative efforts. Maybe you are continuously facing financial pressure from not having sufficient income to cover your outflow. Or, is there someone in your life sapping your energy - a co-worker, friend or family member?
Take a look at the "energizers" in your life. What are your sources of inspiration and feeling fabulous? Is it time to make a change to eliminate energy leaks and drains and reconnect with your positive energy sources in order to re-energize and revitalize your life?
Four Secrets for Increasing Your Energy Efficiency Rating:
1. SLOW DOWN. Give yourself permission to throttle back on the pace of your activities. Stretching yourself to meet demands on your time, energy, emotions and finances can leave you feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. Give yourself a break and let go of commitments and obligations that are robbing time and energy. Ask yourself: What will I do today to slow my pace?
2. TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF. Build time into your schedule to get quiet and relax. Unless you are intentional about setting aside time for yourself, it will be difficult to find the time. We all have the same 24 hours each day, we cannot manufacture more time. However, we can include ourselves in the schedule and set aside at least 5 minutes a day to relax and rejuvenate. Ask yourself: What step will I take today to create time for myself?
3. HAVE A MEDICAL CHECKUP. If you continuously feel tired or drained, perhaps there is a physical reason behind it. Having an annual exam can help you stay on top of health issues and give you peace of mind about your health. Ask yourself: Is it time for a medical checkup? When will I schedule an appointment?
4.BECOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT. We can easily become caught up in striving for success and struggling to meet demands on our time and energy. Most of us exert too much effort to create results. Then we wonder why we are tired, never have enough time and don't have the life we truly want. Why not make it a top priority to become energy efficient? Let go of pushing yourself. Ask yourself: What will I do this week to become more energy efficient?

Cellular Shades And Other Window Treatments Proven To Save Energy Costs

By: Harry Delp

With the rising costs of fuel in the United States people's wallets aren't only taking hits at the gas pump, but they are also taking hits on their home or apartment utility bills. However, there is good news for the energy consumer. The United States Department of Energy has reported that window treatments such as cellular shades can reduce energy waste and therefore energy costs by some 20 percent each year. The average family can save around $325 per year on energy costs by using energy efficient window coverings.

Nowadays you have to save as much money as possible to pay for the rising costs of fuel, says Harry Delp, an expert on window shades and window treatments. It only makes sense to install shades that have been proven by the United States Department of Energy to save you money.

Not all window coverings are created equal in their ability to reduce energy consumption and waste. Window Quilts are the most energy efficient but have functional styling limitations. Bamboo blinds, wood blinds, and mini blinds offer varying degrees of insulation, but without some kind of privacy liner attached the insulating value offered is minimal.

Cellular shades on the other hand are aesthetically appealing, offer a wide variety of hardware upgrades, and offer the highest level of insulation second only to window quilts.

Cellular shades are available in room darkening, light filtering, and complete blackout. They are available in 3/8, 12 and 34 cells. Cellular shades have air pockets between the layers of fabric which trap air and prevent escape. The more cells, the higher the R-value.

In an attempt to increase the energy efficiency level of their cellular shades, Comfortex Window Fashions based in New York, developed a unique upgrade called the ComfortTrack' Energy Saving Sidetrack System.

When a cellular shade is combined with this energy efficient sidetrack system a tough barrier is formed between the frame and the fabric resulting in an increased level of privacy and a thermal performance ranking as high as five times higher than that of a regular pane window. This treatment has been successful for even the most uneconomical windows in the windiest conditions.

Cellular shades can be purchased conveniently through the Internet which will save you even more with the rising costs of fuel. Some websites selling cellular shades and other window coverings offer free shipping on all orders within the main 48 states.
