Stuff on the side of the road,..what are you going to do about it????



Where ever you live, look out your window. Whether you see palm trees, mountains, sand dunes, or water there’s probably litter on the ground, as well as your beautiful view.



Unfortunately Americans love to litter! Nearly every road, pathway, corridor or street across the country has some degree of litter. It’s actually very sad that we can’t seem to control ourselves in this regard.



A conservative estimate by the Department of Transportation is a cost of $150.00 for each mile purged of litter. This is not for landscaping, not for improvements, simply litter pick up and removal.



You might ask “What about using chain gangs?” Although that is an antiquated way of inquiring, there is indeed an inmate program in place for many counties in Florida, and across the country.



However, this is not the free service some might think and the cost for the inmates & county equipment is roughly equal to the cost of a contracted company.



THE MOST AFFORDABLE AND BENEFICIAL PROGRAM TO COMBAT ROADSIDE LITTER IS THE ADOPT A HIGHWAY PROGRAM.



The cost to the state/county is significantly lower compared any other method. A willing organization, who commits to adopting a 2 mile section of highway, and cleans it 4x per year can save the government approx $2400.00 before the two-year contract expires! This is really a substantial savings and does improve the roadways as well.



A local example; State Route 776 is approx. 24.4 miles. This road is part of the new Lemon Bay Myakka Trail Scenic Highway. One of the Scenic Highway Committee’s goals is to get every mile adopted by local business, and non-profits groups.



Let’s say there will be 12 groups, adopting (12) 2-mile sections. By the end of the following two years,…this one effort will have saved the government over $28,800.



Adopting part of the roadway is EASY. If you have a group of conservation minded people, or want your business or club to adopt, it takes a commitment to clean the road 4x a year. For that promise, the state or county will provide you with training, gloves, bags, maybe even sun block and a band-aid.



They will come and pick up your filled bags, and take them to the landfill for you, too! They will also erect a sign at both ends of your section with an announcement to the world claiming you as custodian of that section of corridor! You’ve seen those signs, haven’t you?
