Why I joined Toastmasters International

I am naturally a very chatty person,..I can ramble off about anything and everything. If
I don't know about it, I’ll tell you all about me not knowing anything about that. I am
very nice and friendly but I lack focus and for some reason I try to fill every silence
with spoken words only sometimes entertaining and only sometimes appropriate.

But happy as I am to go on and on about anything in a one on one situation, speaking in
front of a group terrified me. Just the fear caused me to quit college as it seems no
course of study could be completed without at least one Public Speaking Course. I became
a waitress. It's a great job for a chatty kind of girl.

Now it' s nearly 30 years later, I own my own business and I've done much 'public
speaking' in my career. I've spent most of my professional life in sales and retail
endeavors, and still the thought of speaking in front of a crowd frightens me.

Although the fear still grips me tightly, I joined Toastmasters International because my
lack of conversational focus has gotten worse/ I am still in sales and now I volunteer for
some committees and now I am expected to communicate my goals, perform and then communicate
the results back in a clear and organized manner, so I am public speaking more and more. I
really really really really wish I had already taken a public speaking class or two. I
think I could have been a millionaire!

I heard of Toastmasters International through the Internet somehow and I mentioned it to my
mother. She confirmed that Yes, she had heard of it and she called it "Top Drawer Club” I joined the club right away and I feel every week I learn something that I can use
personally and professionally. I have never regretted my decision to join this club.
