How to Make a Bamboo Blind Into Blackout Shades
By Jenny Harrington, eHow Contributor

Many people sleep best in a room with no light. If you live on a well-lit street or must sleep during daylight hours, it can be a problem. Blackout drapes or shades are the most common solution to this problem, but they can be expensive. You can make simple and inexpensive blackout shades with a bamboo blind. It requires no specialized tools or sewing and is attractive when viewed from outside the home.

Instructions

1          Choose a bamboo blind that will cover your window. For maximum light blockage, the blind should overlap the edges of the window on all sides by 4 inches. Make sure it is the style that rolls up and not the venetian blind style.

2.         Lay the black fabric over the blind. Use a heavy or mid weight fabric such as that used for upholstery or drapes. Trim any excess fabric from around the blind so that the fabric just covers it.

3.         Glue the fabric to the blind, starting at the top. Continue gluing until the fabric is firmly attached to the blind. Allow the glue to dry completely for 1 to 2 hours.

4.         Use the hardware that came with the bamboo blind to hang it with the fabric side facing into the room. When the blind is shut it will block out all light.

Tips & Warnings

If your fabric frays easily, glue it on the blinds then trim the excess off.
