How to Make a Bamboo Blind Into Blackout Shades
By Jenny Harrington, eHow Contributor

Many people sleep best in a room with no light. If you live on a well-lit street or must sleep during daylight hours, it can be a problem. Blackout drapes or shades are the most common solution to this problem, but they can be expensive. You can make simple and inexpensive blackout shades with a bamboo blind. It requires no specialized tools or sewing and is attractive when viewed from outside the home.

Instructions

1          Choose a bamboo blind that will cover your window. For maximum light blockage, the blind should overlap the edges of the window on all sides by 4 inches. Make sure it is the style that rolls up and not the venetian blind style.

2.         Lay the black fabric over the blind. Use a heavy or mid weight fabric such as that used for upholstery or drapes. Trim any excess fabric from around the blind so that the fabric just covers it.

3.         Glue the fabric to the blind, starting at the top. Continue gluing until the fabric is firmly attached to the blind. Allow the glue to dry completely for 1 to 2 hours.

4.         Use the hardware that came with the bamboo blind to hang it with the fabric side facing into the room. When the blind is shut it will block out all light.

Tips & Warnings

If your fabric frays easily, glue it on the blinds then trim the excess off.

Bamboo and other woven woods are great for adding a warm, tropical, and exotic look to your home. These rustic, good-looking, shades are some of the most beautiful window treatments we sell.

Made from different materials including bamboo, rattan, grasses, reeds, jutes, fibers, and wood, woven wood blinds are a ‘greener’ alternative for an evironmentally aware world. Bring nature into your daily living space, while being practical and affordable at the same time.

They have an open look, depending on the tightness of the weave, and the airy feel helps make the congenial attitude of your rooms more appealing. A great layer of extra insulation is offered by these natural grasses and wood blinds, even being available with both attached and independently moving liners. Dress up your shades even more with edge bandings and hem attachments.

These liners can also provide privacy behind the woven material making any choice of material or weave a pleasing option for any room. There is a vast multitude of uniquely textured and colored choices,..as many as nature can provide. Additionally, we offer a large selection of paintable products, and we can match to any color of the country’s major paint companies like Benjamin Moore or Scott Paint.

Woven wood blinds are easy to clean. Regular maintenance is recommended, using the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. If you don’t have that attachment, a soft dry cloth will work well as a substitute. **WARNING Only True BAMBOO blinds can even be submersed in soapy water, rinsed and dried if necessary,……

Regular cleanings are the key to beauty and longevity in woven woods blinds.

Woven woods are versatile and can come in many styles, for any window. We offer standard window shapes and specialty shapes like arches too! They can roll up on a roller, and be controlled with cords or chains. They can be roman folded, to lay in even overlapping folds when raised and lay flat when let down. We have a top down bottom up design, and a vertical design resembling old style folding doors.

Whatever your style, or budget we can help create the Paradise you moved here for by bringing the outside world inside to you, with gorgeous, natural woven wood blinds!
