Professional Window Covering Installation - What You Need To Know!

More and more homeowners are turning to professionals for help in selecting and installing their window coverings. Consumers choose professional installation companies because they ensure high quality products, top notch fit and finish, and usually a guarantee. There are three distinct styles of window coverings a professional might suggest; blinds, plantation shutters (shutters) or shades. All of these styles have their pros and cons but the choice usually comes down to application and price.

Blinds –

 Blinds are window coverings that make use of slats or louvers to block the interior of a home from sunlight and outsiders. These slats vary in size and material and are mounted on the track vertically or horizontally. Most window blinds have slats mounted horizontally and are drawn up and down by a string and pulley system. Vertical blinds are common for sliding glass doors and are drawn right to left. Shades –

Shades are a lot like blinds but instead of using slats or louvers to block the window they use fabric. Roman shades, cellular shades, pleated shades and roller shades all utilize soft fabrics to block the window. Alternately, some shades use thin organic materials like straw or bamboo in place of fabric; this is for looks only. Shades also use a string and pulley system to adjust the amount of light that is let into the room. Like blinds, they are mounted vertically with the track at the top of the window. Shades are popular because of their diversity; shades can be very beautiful and ornate or simple and effective. Shades can also be used for a multitude of applications since there are so many varieties.

Plantation Shutters –

Plantation shutters are usually the most expensive of the three window coverings. Plantation shutters, or just shutters, are more expensive because of the quality of their materials and complexity of their design. Just like blinds, shutters use solid slats as a means of blocking the window. Instead of mounting on a track and manipulated by a pulley system; shutter slats are mounted on four distinct frames for each quarter of the window. Each frame is then mounted to the side of the window and swings open on hinges, like a door. Each frame has a centered wooden dowel to control the slats. Plantation shutters are arguably the most aesthetically pleasing of the three window coverings because of their quality design, fit and finish.

Homeowners install blinds, shades and shutters for three major purposes; privacy, aesthetics and comfort. Window coverings offer the homeowner privacy because they obscure the window from outsider view. This gives the homeowner the ability to display or conceal their interior whenever they please.

Shades, blinds and shutters are also used aesthetically in interior design. Aesthetic applications are the most common reason for hiring a professional. A professional installer will have the experience and skills to match a quality window covering to your unique home. They will carefully construction and install the product to ensure proper fit and finish. If looks are the primary objective, a professional installer is the only way to go.

Lastly, window coverings provide the homeowner with comfort. Window coverings block outside light that makes it hard and uncomfortable to read or watch T.V. Shades, shutters and blinds also help with temperature control. Depending on the type of window covering, they can help keep your home cooler during the summer or keep the heat in during the winter.

Blackout Window Blinds and Shades

Are you looking for blackout window blinds or shades? Here we will show you which blinds or shades are room darkening. 

The first thing you need to know about a window covering to see if it is room darkening is how opaque the fabric is. Will it allow light to come through?

Then you have to see if it has holes where the cord passes through, because light can come in from there, too.

Lastly, make sure that the blinds are well fit to minimize light from seeping in from the edges.

So which products have these features mentioned above?

Wood Blinds and Aluminum Blinds the slats are opaque, of course, but the concern here is the holes that the cord goes through. for this you need to get one with the routless feature, these slats are fabricated in a special way so that they don't have holes at all.

Cellular shades can be foil lined to prevent the light from penetrating through the shade. Also make sure they have no holes for the cords (most from reputable companies won't).

To make your shades totally blackout ask for those special tracks on the sides of the shades, they will seal the gap between the shade and the window frame resulting in total darkness (and additional insulation qualifying for a tax credit).

Pleated Shades also comes with a metalized backing to increase room darkening capability.

Roman Shades can be gotten special blackout fabrics. If you use an outside mount, make sure it overlaps at least four inches in each direction to minimize light leakage.

Shutters have a frame around them which makes them pretty much enclosed which is great for room darkening, also the elliptical shaped louvers limit the entrance of light even more.

Other blackout window blinds and shades include Vertical Blinds, Silhouette, Pirouette , and many more. Just remember to ask for the room darkening or blackout version.

The LEMON BAY / MYAKKA TRAIL SCENIC HIGHWAY COMMITTEE took up their cause on Saturday, and cleaned a full two mile section of St Rt 776 in Englewood. The first mile going either direction from the county line was maintained by the committee in an effort to show community support.



From the LB-MT Website, "Whether you are on a brief drive or plan on staying awhile, you have arrived at a place worth experiencing. Lemon Bay and the Myakka River are the significant water resources that give our scenic highway its name." The committee's goals for the highway include beautification, maintenance, and promotion of it's resources. The highway itself consists of State Route 776, County Rd 775, County Rd 771, and a loop of "Englewood Road leading to Dearborn Street and includes the Olde Englewood Village area"

VINTAGE FASHION SHOW EVENT

I really enjoyed taking my granddaughter to a vintage fashion show this past weekend. It was part of the Lemon Bay Fest and was held at the Lemon Bay Playhouse on Dearborn St. The weather cooperated with sunshine and a string breeze. We saw an antique car in the parking lot, and I was happy when someone volunteered to take a picture of us in front of it!

We went in, paid our way, and were given a numbered ticket stubs and programs made to look like an old fashioned, turn of the century paper doll.

We took our seats and the lights went down. It was Shantel's first experience in a theatre that didn't double as a gymnasium.

I was happy to be presented with a program of not just vintage clothing, but also quite a bit of historic prose, with stories of the founders of Englewood. We even had twin descendants of Englewood's first family, actually modeling clothing and in the audience! I really strive to instill a love of learning in Shantel and it's good for her to see other people, besides just me, in an educational and fun setting.


At the end, we were greeting in the lobby with treats and punch, and I was thrilled to meet Karen from Karen's Creamy on State Rt 776. She has been an inspiration to me since I first heard her do an interview, years ago on "All About Women", a WENG AM radio program. She's a fantastic female entrepreneur! I hope she was pleased to hear me tell her how that interview still motivates me to keep going in my business, striving for excellence.

On the way home I quizzed Shantel on what we had heard and learned,….. like mom did to us. Here are some memorable facts. :-)

The first zippers were made for boots.

It wasn't until a few years later that they were added to clothing,..

children's clothing to make a parent's life easier.

The short dress of the 20's was actually a style started in the 1910's and carried over.

Don’t be fooled by cardboard shutters!!!!!!!


Even big worldwide companies sell these types of cheaply made, Chinese manufactured, particle board filled shutters,. they look nice,…until someone leaves the window open over night & the morning dew hits it a few times. Or someone really sprays it down good with cleaner to wipe them off. The composite material inside will swell & look horrible. You ‘permanent home improvement’ will become a permanent eyesore, & thorn in your side.

As the owner of a window treatment store, I have relationships with all kinds of shutter manufacturers. There are several different types of interior shutters & you really need to know what you are getting. To make that a little easier, I wrote the following article.


How to choose Interior Shutters for You Home**

There are many types of shutters on the market these days & choosing the right shutter for your home, & your lifestyle can be a daunting task. There is a multitude of choices in style & composition, & also color, size, & design. Here, we will outline the most popular types of shutters available in our area, & make it easy for you to act like an expert shutter shopper! You’ll discover the hidden secrets inside the shutter itself, see why they can pay for itself with utility bill savings, as well as look beautiful & luxurious in your home! Once installed, you’ll have that satisfying & valuable peace of mind, knowing you have made an impact on the energy usage in your home.

Shutters are great for every room of the house. Looking just as great from the outside, as they do from the inside, shutters are especially appropriate for neighborhoods that like to keep a clean & uniform look on the block! Beach side villas, condos, & homes can close the louvers & still have light inside without affecting our local Sea Turtle mating season.

We’ll begin with a general description of the most common shutter features.

Shutters can replace, sit on top of, or cover a marble windowsill. They can completely install inside the dimensions of the window or install around the window giving it a picture frame effect. The choice is yours in color, louver size, & style. Louvers can come locally anywhere from 2 ½ to 4 ½ inches wide. The control arm for the louvers can be in the front, hidden in the back, or not present at all.

Panels can be hinged, bi-folded on a track, or each panel can hang from a bypass track system allowing each panel to ‘rest’ on top of each other when all are slid to the side. The bypass track system is most popularly used application, to cover a sliding glass door! We even have beautiful cutouts for door h&les, if you’d like to adorn your French doors with shutters!

Shutters can also cover your arched windows. Traditional louver or a sunburst pattern, are your choice of style in shutter arches. Louvers in arches can be stationary or mobile.

Shutters are made with a divider rail separating the top & bottom portions of each panel. You decide how high these rails are to be built in, in order for you to maximize your control of light & privacy in each room.

Today, most all PVC products used in shutter coverings are specially infused with material to deflect heat & UV rays. This is especially helpful to us in the Gulf Coast area as we try to combat the constantly rising cost of heating in the winter &, more to the point, cooling in the summer.

Vinyl Shutters – Fire retardant & self-extinguishing, this sturdy shutter is made from extrusion with computer-designed dimensions. I am so happy, here in my neighborhood, Hurricane and/or Tropical Storm Fay stayed away!
I'll happily take my boards down from my storefront windows and happily return them to the back room and put that storage closet back together like it was last week,....as if I was never scared at all,........
I'll clean up the mess I made as I bunkered here, behind the boards for a day or so, with my candles, tuna, and bottled water, doing as much work on the computer as I could before the power went out. I'll put my plants back out near my back door and have a grand old WEDNESDAY!!!!!!
