Three Advantages to Using Inside Shutters As Window Dressings

My favourite style of shutter is Plantation Shutters by Eclipse. "What are Plantation Shutters?" you ask. They're a stylish window covering made of two or more framed panels and fixed louvers. The very wide louvers within the frame are moved by a rod that is attached on the inside edge of the louvers, where you cannot see them when inside the room of the window they're installed on.

All you need to do to open or close the louvers is move one of the louvers and they others attached to the same rod follow. If you need to get at your window, say for cleaning, you can easily pull back the panel of louvers, exposing the entire window.

I choose Eclipse Plantation Shutters for a variety of reasons;

1.      the main reason being that they give my living room a modern, polished appearance.

2.      the ability to control the afternoon sun entering the room. My living room window faces west. Now I can easily adjust the louvers to allow as much or as little sunlight as I want. Unlike blinds or curtains, when the louvers are closed on shutters they don't have gaps for light to enter. These shutters also help to block out external noise, as I live on a main thoroughfare.

3.      The third, and every bit as essential a reason for choosing Eclipse Plantation Shutters, is that they require minimal maintenance, requiring only a simple dusting.

Shutters might be initially more costly than other window fashions. How to Pick the Right Color for Your Shutters

When choosing window treatments for your new home or renovation project, it’s often difficult to determine what color your pieces should be. Should they be a neutral addition to the room, or pack a punch of color? I think it’s safe to say that curtains and shades are openly accepted and appreciated in a variety of colors. For the purpose of the article, let’s make things a little more difficult and talk about how to determine what color your shutters should be.

Steps

Determine whether your shutters will be on the interior or exterior
of your home.

If your shutters will be on the outside of your home, choose materials that you know they are durable and will be able to withstand the elements.

Decide whether you’d like your window treatments to be statement pieces or to neutrally support the decorative themes already present in your home (If there’s already a lot of big eye-catchers in the room, you may want to opt for something more neutral, whereas if everything blends together, you might want to play up a specific bold color).

Consider whether any colors stick out as primary or accent colors in the room where you're installing shutters. If you already have one color that’s well represented, pick another color that works well within the room (perhaps it’s already present in smaller amounts), and use your window treatments to play up that accent color.

Think about the mood you want to convey in the room: dark, rich colors convey romance, brighter blues and greens can have a playful effect, and pastels help to sooth and relax your guests.

Consider different rooms in your house when making design decisions. Try to find balance (not every room in your house should showcase neon-colored drapes) while also continuing themes (neon-colored drapes in one room and modern, structured furniture in the next makes a seamless transition).

If you're still stuck, consider the region you live in, or a culture you celebrate, as a basis for a color palette.

Choose a window treatment company that won't limit your design ideas. Some companies specialize in patterns, engraving, or even stained glass as embellishments, so make sure you research your options and take time to consider your desired effect before making a purchase.

Tips

For outdoor shutters, lighter colors are less forgiving when it comes to wear and tear, but also don’t attract as much heat as a darker shade.

The materials you choose may limit your color choices, so consult your manufacturer before making any final decisions.

Don’t be fooled by cardboard shutters!!!!!!!


Even big worldwide companies sell these types of cheaply made, Chinese manufactured, particle board filled shutters,. they look nice,…until someone leaves the window open over night & the morning dew hits it a few times. Or someone really sprays it down good with cleaner to wipe them off. The composite material inside will swell & look horrible. You ‘permanent home improvement’ will become a permanent eyesore, & thorn in your side.

As the owner of a window treatment store, I have relationships with all kinds of shutter manufacturers. There are several different types of interior shutters & you really need to know what you are getting. To make that a little easier, I wrote the following article.


How to choose Interior Shutters for You Home**

There are many types of shutters on the market these days & choosing the right shutter for your home, & your lifestyle can be a daunting task. There is a multitude of choices in style & composition, & also color, size, & design. Here, we will outline the most popular types of shutters available in our area, & make it easy for you to act like an expert shutter shopper! You’ll discover the hidden secrets inside the shutter itself, see why they can pay for itself with utility bill savings, as well as look beautiful & luxurious in your home! Once installed, you’ll have that satisfying & valuable peace of mind, knowing you have made an impact on the energy usage in your home.

Shutters are great for every room of the house. Looking just as great from the outside, as they do from the inside, shutters are especially appropriate for neighborhoods that like to keep a clean & uniform look on the block! Beach side villas, condos, & homes can close the louvers & still have light inside without affecting our local Sea Turtle mating season.

We’ll begin with a general description of the most common shutter features.

Shutters can replace, sit on top of, or cover a marble windowsill. They can completely install inside the dimensions of the window or install around the window giving it a picture frame effect. The choice is yours in color, louver size, & style. Louvers can come locally anywhere from 2 ½ to 4 ½ inches wide. The control arm for the louvers can be in the front, hidden in the back, or not present at all.

Panels can be hinged, bi-folded on a track, or each panel can hang from a bypass track system allowing each panel to ‘rest’ on top of each other when all are slid to the side. The bypass track system is most popularly used application, to cover a sliding glass door! We even have beautiful cutouts for door handles, if you’d like to adorn your French doors with shutters!

Shutters can also cover your arched windows. Traditional louver or a sunburst pattern, are your choice of style in shutter arches. Louvers in arches can be stationary or mobile.

Shutters are made with a divider rail separating the top & bottom portions of each panel. You decide how high these rails are to be built in, in order for you to maximize your control of light & privacy in each room.

Today, most all PVC products used in shutter coverings are specially infused with material to deflect heat & UV rays. This is especially helpful to us in the Gulf Coast area as we try to combat the constantly rising cost of heating in the winter &, more to the point, cooling in the summer.

Vinyl Shutters – Fire retardant & self-extinguishing, this sturdy shutter is made from extrusion with computer-designed dimensions. Durable & long lasting these are great for all areas, from kid & pet filled homes to a beautiful retirement home! Easy to maintain & design, these vinyl shutters come with a 25-year warranty! We find these to be the best value.

Solid Poly Shutters – Shutters created from a solid poly extruded material, this is then wrapped in the Celuka Vinyl process. You can get these in white or stained natural colors.


Wood Wrapped Shutters – Shutters made from solid wood or fiberboard planks that are stacked together, & wrapped with a Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) coating. The Vinyl is actually clad over the wood with a special heating process.

Wood Composite Wrapped Shutters – Shutters made from solid pieces of compressed composite ‘wood’ wrapped in a material called Celuka Vinyl, which is a hard poly foam product that protects & strengthens the shutters.

Wooden Shutters – Solid wood construction from woods such as Cedar, Oak, Poplar & Pine. However, the most popular, best quality wood for interior wood shutters is Basswood, & if you choose wooden shutters in our humid area, you’ll be glad you chose Basswood, for it’s dependable performance in color steadfastness & strength. You can get these finished or unfinished, stained or painted.

PS Don’t forget! Cleaning shutters is a breeze! For PVC products you need a gentle soap and water mixture only occasionally, when done to support a regular light dusting. Make sure to never use water on wooden products.
